Love And Demons

A fascinating story is told in three of the Gospels about Jesus meeting a disturbed man ("a man from the city who had demons") Lk. 8:26‑39, Matt.8:28‑34, Mk. 5:1‑20

Today, we would say this man had mental illness. Jesus came into this man's life, and the demons went out! What a wonder‑ cure this is to our pressure‑filled world. When Jesus comes in...demons go out! When love comes in, demons must flee!

And here is a miracle‑cure just as real as penicillin, just as valid as insulin; just as real as any of the modern wonder‑ working medical drugs. If only we realized the power of the love of Jesus! If only we believed the cure of His Presence in human life.

You and I have a power that we can give to those around us! It is the power of love...it is the saving presence of Jesus that is better than aspirin, more powerful than cobalt treatment or a laser beam. Demons go down by the bushel when love comes in! Thank God, we don't have to wait years and years for any other wonder‑cure! It began in the heart of God; it became crystal clear on a hill‑side cross; it takes place any day, any time, in the human heart, when we accept the healing love of God through Jesus Christ.

So... I'm going to assume this isn't one of those spoof sites, and that you truly believe being "saved" by Jesus is "as real as penicillin, just as valid as insulin; just as real as any of the modern wonder‑ working medical drugs." Does this mean you forgo going to the hospital or the doctor whenever you feel the flu or a stomach virus coming on? You simply pray for Jesus to take your cold away? To mend your broken leg?

I feel your brand of Jesus is a dangerous notion; people who have actual problems and diseases will listen to this and think they don't need to take their antipsychotics; will think they need not be on their bipolar medication; that the voices they hear may be demons instead of a neurological, psychological disorder that needs treatment.

You may believe what you wish, but I think you are perpetuating a dangerous notion, and you should rethink the way you present it if indeed I am wrong in reading what you posted here.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your comments, but no, I am not a rabid fundamentalist! Indeed, I think I abhor that aspect of religion as much or more than you might.
By the way...cute picture of your dog! It's a bit faint, but I assume it is yours.
I go to the doctors regularly, and have a great deal of confidence in the skills they apply to my body. And no, Jason, people are not really going to read my article and decide to stop taking their pills. At least most people have more sense than that.
But I do believe that when I am in gear with the truth and can feel love and forgiveness to those around me, there is a power within me that can bring healing to a troubled heart, as well as to a sickly body. And that is the healing that is more than what the doctors can do. It comes from God. And since I find that God is too awesome and too intangible for me to totally comprehend and understand, I find that Jesus has given me about the best picture of God that there is, and so I get a lot of help from Him.
If I ever reach perfection, I'll let you know...but since I don't think that will ever happen, I remain your humble friend. Francis
